Office of Drug Control grants first cannabis licence

Published

On Friday 17 February 2017, the Office of Drug control issued the very first licence under the medicinal cannabis provisions of the Narcotic Drugs Act 1967. The licence is a cannabis research licence and has been issued to Cannoperations Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Australian company Cann Group Limited.

The licence allows Cannoperations to legally cultivate medicinal cannabis and conduct research on the use of cannabis for medicinal purposes.

Cannoperations is licensed to cultivate cannabis to undertake both its own research exploring optimal cultivation and production methodologies and strain development, and to support other research being undertaken into medicinal cannabis products.

This research is expected to assist doctors in understanding the appropriate application and prescription of medicinal cannabis.

Cannoperations is engaging with a number of leading Australian medical and technology organisations around other research opportunities.
